Myrdin was on the roof of Danby Auto Parts, a squat two-story brick of beige concrete blocks. He stood in the dying sun holding a test tube and a rubber stopper. The heat from the flat tar roof soaked through his flip-flops.
Grand Magician Ignatius Drake, or Iggy as he had been instructed to refer to him, was gleaning his net. He pulled the entire thing down, like a fisherman hauling a catch aboard. The souls trapped within fluttered and writhed like strange fireflies. Myrdin’s job during this process was to hold the test tube where the soul would be stored and, once Iggy had inserted a soul, to cork the top while whispering a simple spell.
“You don’t want too complex of a spell right now because we’ll just be opening these back up to strip them down later,” Iggy explained.
Once the test tube had been filled, Myrdin put it in a special rack that Iggy had bought from the scientific supply store.
“Good work, Tom,” Iggy told him. “When you’re older and you’re doing this yourself, you’ll use your own materials, of course. Everett tells me that Zachary uses some kind of cocoons. It makes perfect sense, you know, him using a metaphor from the insect kingdom. His mother was a natural scientist. I imagine you’ll use some kind of art-based method. Folded paper, maybe. There is a sect of folded-paper magicians far to the south who are quite fierce.”
“I don’t think I’ll be growing up to be anything other than a servant,” Myrdin reminded the old man. “Grand Magician Drake is known to keep tight hold of his souls.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t be so sure about tales of Zachary’s great cruelty if I were you. I’ve never seen him so much as swat a fly.”
“But you also haven’t seen him in a very long time.” Myrdin spoke as gently as he could, a trick he’d learned from years of placating Louis. “I’m happy to learn whatever you teach me, but let’s not delude ourselves about my bright future.”
Iggy paused and regarded him, a sad smile on his face, before reaching out and ruffling his hair. For some reason, Iggy could not resist bestowing random hair rufflings on him and now Myrdin found himself pleasantly anticipating the touch.
“You’re so unnerving when you talk like that. Anyway I’m an old man. Indulge me in my high hopes for your success, as I’m far too old to entertain realistic dreams of my own.”
